You can import GPX and KML files into NavOffroad Planner by selecting 'File' from the 'Import' menu, and export them as GeoJSON from the 'Export' menu. GeoJSON files can be be imported directly into the NavOffroad iPad® and iPhone® apps. The apps can also import GPX and KML files up to 2MB.
GPX and KML files are widely available online through mapping websites, hiking and off-road communities, and shared trail databases. Keep in mind that the accuracy and quality of these files can vary, so it's best to review them before use.
You can add map tile layers to the NavOffroad Planner. Select 'Map tiles' from the 'Import' menu and enter the 'XYZ' formatted URL, e.g., for the US topographic map:
https://basemap.nationalmap.gov/arcgis/rest/services/USGSTopo/MapServer/tile/{z}/{y}/{x}
To use map tiles in the NavOffroad iPad® and iPhone® apps, first select 'TileJSON' from the 'Export' menu (in the NavOffroad Planner). This downloads a TileJSON file that defines your Tile Map Server layer. You can import it directly into apps. You can also import a TileJSON file into the NavOffroad Planner from the 'Import' menu . It must have the extension '.json' or '.tilejson'.
Note: if you import multiple layers, they stack on top of each other.
Here are TileJSON files that you can use:

Cloud Optimized GeoTIFF (COG) is a standard for hosting geo image files on the Web. Select the 'Cloud Optimized GeoTIFF' option from the 'Import' menu and enter the COG URL. Follow the steps in the previous section to generate a TileJSON file that you can import it into the NavOffroad iPad® and iPhone® apps. You also import the COG URL directly in the apps.
You can download offroad trails into the NavOffroad Planner by selecting 'Offroad trails' from the 'Import' menu. The trails within the currently displayed map area will be shown. You can repeat this process for different map areas. Once you're ready, you can export the trails and import them into the NavOffroad iPad® and iPhone® apps. The apps can also download offroad trails directly.
Trails are color-coded in increasing level of difficulty:
| Unknown | |
| Easy | |
| Moderate | |
| Challenging | |
| Difficult |
Important: The scale is realtive so one person's easy might be another's moderate. Always check the trail in advance.
Offroad tails are provided by © OpenStreetMap under the Open Database License and are selected based on the following criteria:
